 Before we ever created the Unleash YES Bootcamp, we both launched consulting businesses in our zone of genius: assessment and grading. At the time, we held jobs that most educators would kill forâTom as a district-level leader, and Natalie as a K-12 Assessment Lead.
On paper, we were thriving. But behind the scenes, we were exhaustedâand slowly losing ourselves.
We didnât want to leave education. We loved this work. But the deeper we got into leadership, the more we realized: the system wasnât built to support innovators like us. We were constantly being asked to tone it down, follow someone else's agenda, and stay small.
And when we started to imagine something different, a career with more freedom, more alignment, more impact, we were flooded with guilt.
Who were we to want that?
Werenât we supposed to stay âin the trenchesâ?
Was seeking more freedom selfish?
Tom began getting invitations to speak and consult with districts across Canada, but had to say no because of internal complaints from colleagues. For Natalie, the breaking point came in December 2021, in the middle of a nervous breakdown. It became painfully clear: she could no longer serve education in a space that was actively destroying her mental health (and leading to a whole array of physical ailments, like random anaphylactic attacks).
Still, we waited.
We thought we needed more credentials. A beautiful website. A massive following. Some kind of permission slip that said:Â now youâre ready.
But that permission never came.
And eventually, the regret of never having tried became louder than the comfort of staying.
So we took the leap.
We each launched lean, heart-led consulting businesses without an MBA, without funding, and definitely without a plan to "scale." And when we landed our first clients? Everything changed. Joy came rushing back. Our energy returned. And for the first time in a long time, we felt like we were truly leading again.

Natalie Vardabasso
Natalie left her job in May 2022 and launched her first online group coaching program, The Empowerment Ecosystem, which grew into in-person events and a thriving career as a speaker and consultant. Today, she works with schools and districts across North America, specializing in equitable assessment and grading.
A former classroom teacher, K-12 instructional coach, and assessment lead, Natalie deeply understands the challenges educators face when stepping into entrepreneurship.
